Students build a model of a rattlesnake and test two of its defense systems â the warning rattle and the venomous bite. Afterwards, they choose another animal with a particular defense mechanism and build it. They then share the build with the class and explain the animal's defense mechanism. Afterwards, they compare their animals to real-life examples of animals with special defense mechanisms (skunk, armadillo, poison dart frog and hedgehog). An optional evaluation prompt asks students to show different ways that animals protect themselves.
